Style
Housed in a 1930s Beaux-Arts building, The Carlyle is a contemporary take on old world elegance with their black and gold marble lobby. Art Deco interiors and Renaissance-like oil paintings also decorate the room as well. Originally designed by Dorothy Draper, The Carlyle has gone through several renovations, but still upholds the original style.
Rooms
Most of The Carlyle’s 188 rooms and suites have received a recent makeover by Tony Chi, who also styled The Rosewood London. Guestrooms feature: pillow-top beds, Rivolta Carmignani linens, four-fixture marble baths, and Kiehl’s toiletry sets.
We stayed in the 450-square foot Premier Room with a luxurious king bed, a gorgeous bathroom with separate soaking tub and rain shower, and city views overlooking Madison Avenue. It’s an amazing new guestroom design.
Facilities
The Sisley Spa comes with an oasis of luxury and tranquility and specializes in plant-based skincare and phyto-aromatic treatments. The Replumping Youth Facial is one of the best facials to get here.
The Carlyle is also home to an Yves Durif Salon and a 24-hour fitness center that comes with Technogym equipment and on-site trainers.
Food & Drink
The Carlyle offers a fair amount of choices when it comes to dining and drinks. Their restaurant is a chic and elegant experience which is led by Executive Chef Ron Pietruszka. It comes with a classic American cuisine with European flair. Jackets are preferred for dinner service, but it’s worth dressing formal for the lobster bisque.
Café Carlyle is a supper club that has live, classic, cabaret music. Headlining talents have included: Laura Benanti, Alan Cumming, Judy Collins, and Woody Allen. Lastly, reservations are required for you to partake in this club.
The Gallery, which is inspired by the Turkish sultan’s dining room, serves afternoon tea and modern twists on classics in a casual dining atmosphere. You can indulge in Hudson Valley Foie Gras, house-made pates, traditional tea sandwiches and scones, while drinking English or exotic teas.
Named after the creator of Madeline children’s books, Bemelmans Bar is a timeless lounge that maintains their legacy with large-scale murals decorating their walls. The bar appeals to celebrities, politicians, socialites, and more. It also features an extensive drink menu and nightly live entertainment as well.
Service
Service at the Carlyle is buttoned-up, but with a “we’ll make it happen” attitude that makes your stay much more pleasant. Everyone from the elaborately-uniformed bellhop to the white-gloved elevator operator somehow knows your names, addressing you with utmost formality as you pass by. Their dedicated service meant we never touched our luggage between the cab and our room.
Location
The Carlyle sits in a great location on the Upper East Side at Madison and 76th. This is also known as “the corner of Wealth and Sophistication.” Central Park is just a block away, The Met, the Whitney, and upscale boutiques and restaurants are all walking distance.
Address: 35 East 76th Street.
