Things You Should Know About Chase
- Chase’s infamous 5/24 Rule may be a bummer. You won’t be approved for most Chase cards if you’ve received more than 5 new cards in the last 24 months. Though, not officially confirmed by Chase, this guideline applies to all new card accounts opened in the past 24 months, not just Chase cards.
- You can get the sign up bonus on Chase cards more than one time. As long as you abide by the 5/24 Rule and it’s been at least 24 months since you’ve last received the bonus, it’s absolutely possible for you to get a Chase credit card sign-up bonus multiple times.
- You’ll only be approved for two Chase cards per month. Generally, Chase won’t approve you for more than two of their cards per month. Business and personal credit cards are considered separate. Sometimes, you can get approved for three or more by calling in, but that is difficult.
- Chase will match-up higher sign-up bonuses if you notify them within 90 days of application. If you sign up for a bonus and Chase increases the bonus amount within 90 days, contact them to have your bonus matched up. Though, if the annual fee is different, they will often reject your request. If they do approve, you’ll keep the lower annual fee, per the Credit CARD Act.
- They not only offer generous credit card bonuses, but they also offer lavish checking & savings accounts bonuses. Earning $150-$300 on the total checking account and $150-$300 on the savings account are definitely common. You can read more on current Chase Bank bonuses if you’re interested.
- If you apply for multiple Chase cards in one day, hard credit pulls will be combined. Business and personal inquiries will not be combined.
- Participate in the Refer-A-Friend Program. Refer friends to the Chase credit cards you have. The typically bonus is $100 or 10,000 points for every referred friend. The bonus your friend receives and what is available regularly changes.
- Expedite your cards with 1-2 day shipping. If your card is lost or stolen, they will expedite you a credit card via snail mail for free. Just be sure to contact Chase and make a request.
- Call for reconsideration if you’re declined a credit card. You may be approved after they ask some basic questions. Make sure you have a valid reason for wanting the card, for example, a unique feature that the card offers. In addition, know your credit score and report, as different cards require different scores.
- Check your application status online. Click on “Manage Accounts” under Customer Center. Then, find the “Check my application(s) status” under Open a New Account. You can also call (888) 338-2586.
- There is no credit limit to the amount of Chase credit cards you can have. This is limited to how much credit you’re approved for. If you’re denied for a card, you can always request to transfer some of that credit limit to a new card.
- See if you’re pre-approved for a card online. This feature only works on Chase branded cards (Chase Sapphire, Chase Freedom, etc.). It’s not available for Chase co-branded credit cards (Chase Southwest, Chase Marriott, etc.)
- Asking for a credit limit increase will result in a hard credit pull.
- Distributing your credit limits between existing cards will result in a soft credit pull. This is not an option if your increasing the credit limit on a card to more than $35,000. It will be a hard pull instead.
- There is a $500 minimum credit limit on all Chase cards. If you’re opening or closing an account and you wan to transfer credit limits, keep in mind you need to keep a credit limit of at least $500 on each card.
- It’s possible for Chase to pull from a different bureau if you freeze your report. If you want to limit the number of inquiries on one of your credit reports, you can freeze that. Usually, Chase will agree to pull your report from one of the other bureaus. If they don’t allow it, they’ll let you grant them a PIN, giving them access to the original report they wanted to pull.
- Get your points posted sooner than normal. All you have to do is make the minimum spending requirement, then change the statement closing date to something sooner. Then, once the statement closes, the bonus points should be posted onto your account.
- Change your statement closing date. Chase is flexible with your statement closing date usually when your account is in good standing.
- Chase business credit cards don’t get reported to personal credit bureaus. This is great for keeping your credit report cleaner.
- You won’t usually earn a retention bonus. However, it’s still worth calling. These bonuses or spending offers are generally given when you annual fee is coming, but it’s best to call in early for one.
- Receive targeted spending bonuses. Chase often sends out targeted offers for spending on their cards on MyChaseBonus.com.
- You usually have between 103 – 115 days after being approved to meet the minimum spend requirement. If you don’t make your minimum spend in time, it’s still worth the try to ask them for the bonus. Sometimes, they’ll give you it.
- Chase allows product downgrades but only within the same brand. For example, if you have a Chase United MileagePlus Explorer Card and you want to change to a Chase United Card, it’s possible. But, you can’t exchange it for a British Airways co-branded card.
- Participate in Chase Offers. Log into your account and add Chase Offers to your card. You can receive up to an extra 10% cash back or points for your purchases with your Chase credit cards.
- Usually, Chase will refund the annual fee if you cancel within one or two statements. The rule varies among what card it is. However, if you forget to cancel your card and your annual fee is posted, you can get a refund. Just don’t stall too long!
- A closed credit card account can be reinstated up to 30 days after you close it if you change your mind and decide you want the card.
- If you make a partial or full payment and have auto pay set up, they will pull the full amount.
