Fine Print
- Eligibility. You can apply for membership and open a checking account in person at any BECU location or online at BECU’s website. Referring member must be 18 years or older, in good standing, and a primary on a Member Share or Member Advantage savings account. Referred friend must not be an existing member, must be within BECU’s field of membership, and be eligible to open and maintain membership. Not all applicants will qualify. Referred friends who were a BECU member during the past six months and are now rejoining BECU do not qualify for the Refer-a-Friend promotion. Joint account holders, Business, Fiduciary, HSA, Zero Dividend, Early Saver account holders, and BECU employees are not eligible to participate in the Refer-a-Friend promotion.
- Unique Referral Code. The referred friend must enter the promo code REFER and the referring member’s unique referral code at time of application. BECU is not required to pay the promotional incentive for accounts opened without the appropriate promo code and referral code.
- Referral Process. Accounts must remain open and in good standing for at least 90 days. New member and referring member will receive the $100 bonus deposit to the Member Share or Member Advantage savings account within 120 days of opening qualifying accounts, provided that they meet the transaction requirements within 30 days and keep accounts open and in good standing for at least 90 days.
- Prohibited Actions. The Refer-a-Friend promotion is designed to reward real referrals. Any attempts to manipulate, abuse, or game the promotion are strictly prohibited. This includes but is not limited to:
- Referring individuals who have previously applied for an account with BECU.

For the $100 Referral Bonus: Once your friend meets the qualifications, they get $100 AND you get $100. I have done this every year with a few friends and neighbors each time. Sometimes people say, “oh, but I like my current bank, I don’t need another checking account”. I tell them, “So do what I do–just use the BECU accounts for an Emergency Fund! Use the checking account like a savings account. BECU pays good interest on the first $500 in checking and the first $500 in savings, so I keep $500 in each and then I know I have $1000 total for my Emergency Fund. ” Several people have liked that idea and signed up.
Typo in the description:
“Additionally they will have to either:
Make a purchase with their new Debit Mastercard, write a check or electronic check, and make one payment with bill pay.
Deposit $500 or more into your checking account.”
That should say “Deposit $500 or more into THEIR checking account.”!
While they need to make a $500 deposit into checking (or jump through some other hoops) to trigger the bonus, the money doesn’t have to STAY in the account. I usually tell people to give it a day or two to make sure it posts, then they can hit the ATM and pull out as much as they need to. I think it’s a good idea to always keep a few bucks in the savings account since that’s the account that makes you a credit union member. (Many years ago a different credit union unexpectedly closed my accounts when I goofed and left a zero balance in that CU’s savings account.)

A simple review:
I just opened an account by using one of codes below 🙂
It’s pretty straight forward and all you need to do is to deposit $500 into checking account to be qualified. No monthly fee, no inactivity charge etc.
Two good things to mention are:
1. International Wire Transfer incoming is FREE of charge. Chase usually charged $15 for such transactions. I transferred my money from Canada in and it is all free. Use Wells Forgo’s SWIFT code for incoming wire, just ask for details when you walk into a branch if you need this kind of services.
2. The first $500 in checking and first $500 in savings have a special interest rate (a high 5% and 6%) so it’s a free $50 every year to just keep $1000 in the account. While you need to make at least one transaction or direct deposit to maintain this feature. Or just schedule a 2-dollar ACH transfer monthly to satisfy this requirement. Also, if you don’t do so, the account is still free and you don’t need to call in the make a switch.
